 Contour Line Drawing

Sample | FAQs

Description

Create a contour line drawing of a still life set up in the studio.

Goals

  • This project will give you the opportunity to practice and explore the expressive potential of line.

  • the ability to draw effectively with line is the foundation for all further levels of drawing skill.

  • contour line drawing is the beginning of three dimensional visualization.

Process

A contour is an outline that is not restricted to defining just the outer shape of an object. Contours can wrap around an object such as the lines of a striped shirt or a fold in fabric that wraps around a figure. Blind contour drawing is the act of drawing contours while keeping the eye focused on the object, meanwhile the hand follows the eye. The object is to avoid looking at the drawing as you are making it. As a result, accurate proportions are not the goal, drawing what you are seeing is.

Materials

  • White drawing paper (18x24 inches)

  • 2b or charcoal pencil

Evaluation

You will be evaluated on your ability to see contour and to draw with a quality line. The contour line should be lively, spontaneous, edgy and changing from thick to thin rhythmically and smoothly.
