Your sketchbook will be evaluated 4 times over the course of the semester. Please note: Content is subject to change.
Each sketchbook evaluation is worth 4% for an overall subtotal of 16% of your final grade.
First Evaluation
Value: 4%
Due: 2/15
Week 1
No assignment
Week 2
Make at least ten drawings of simple objects you find around the house. Label each by identifying it and descriing where you found it. Add any other relevant information if you can think of it.
Week 3
Fill your sketchbook with 10 examples of artists whose work you admire or who you'd like to emulate.Write one or two sentences about why you like each work.
Week 4
Spend an hour practicing contour line drawing. Work from life or from photos. Try and choose organic subject matter that requires you to wrap lines in front and in back of each other.
Week 5
Spend an hour practicing contour line drawing. Work from life or from photos. Choose mechanical organic matter with curves, like a car, a vacuum cleaner or a lawn mower.
Second Evaluation

Week 6
Spend from half an hour to an hour on a one point perspective drawing of a room in your house. Include furniture and other objects.
Week 7
Spend from half an hour to an hour on a two point perspective drawing of an interesting building like your house, gas station or some other structure.
Week 8
Make a value drawing of a paper bag.
Week 9
Take an everyday object such as a cup and give it an alien skin, that is to say, cover it with a fabric that has an unexpected texture. Make a drawing of the object. See an Example
Third Evaluation
Value: 4%

Week 10
Do a drawing of a chair and include as much texture detail as you can. For instance, wood grain, fabric, scoring etc. Choose a chair that offers lots of textures to draw.
Week 11
Do a shaded drawing of a glass of water. Be sure to use proper perspective. Choose an oblique view, from the top or bottom, so that the elipse of the glass is visible. Make an effort to capture as much of the reflected light as you can. Practice cross hatching and stipple techniques. Fill the drawing with a variety of textures including stippling, hatching, dots, tiny circles, rough, smooth, spiky etc.
Week 12
Spring Break. No assignment.
Week 13
Do a detailed tonal drawing of a glass of water. Place the glass in front of a light source that produces interesting shadows. Spend at least half an hour to an hour on the drawing.

Week 14
Focus on drawing the negative space of the forms you are observing. Help yourself by choosing subjects with a lot of negative space such as plants, groups of chairs, architectural spaces etc. Spend half an hour to an hour.
