 Art 100 Sketchbook Assignments

First Evaluation | Second (Midterm) Evaluation | Third Evaluation | Final Evaluation

Your sketchbook will be evaluated 4 times over the course of the semester. Please note: Content is subject to change.

Each sketchbook evaluation is worth 4% for an overall subtotal of 16% of your final grade.

First Evaluation
Value: 4%
Due: 9/7

Learning outcomes for these assignments are:

  • How to use pure gesture free of the burden of representation
  • How to create a variety of effects with your tools
  • How to link gesture to emotion and feeling
  • Explore the implications of circular vs angular gestures

Week 1 (8/15)

Part 1. Make a drawing that combines two animals from the class handout.

Part 2. Blind Rhythmic Drawing: While listening to music on headphones, make an abstract gestural drawing that moves with the flow of the music. Try and fill the whole page. Keep your eyes closed. Make 5 drawings. Example by Il Lee.

Week 2 (8/22)

Make 5 blind contour drawings of your hand, shoe, foot or some other object.

Week 3 (8/29)

Make 5 drawings that combine dripped ink and pictures cut out from Magazines or newspapers.

Week 4 (9/5)

Complete a minimum of 50 texture drawings begun in class.

Second Evaluation
Value: 4%
Due: 10/5

Week 5 (9/12)

Arrange a still life of patterned objects and make a pencil drawing of it.

Week 6 (9/19)

No assignment this week.

 

Learning outcomes for the following assignments are:

  • How to draw from direct observation
  • How to create many levels of contrast
  • How to create value using line and shading
  • How to create form using line and shading

Week 7 (9/26)

Place the following objects under a direct light source and make a value drawing of each: glass of water, a spherical shape like a ball or orange, and common kitchen utensil.

Week 8 (10/3)

Revised: Repeat the assignment from Week 7 using three other objects found in a junk drawer.

Third Evaluation
Value: 4%
Due: 11/7

Week 9 (10/10)

Add five finished (as opposed to quick) drawings to your sketchbook. Let each drawing be related to the other by a theme, such as "shoes" or "drawings of television images". Use a graphite pencil and add value to each drawing. Spend at least 15 minutes on each drawing.

Week 10 (10/17)

Add five finished (as opposed to quick) drawings to your sketchbook. Let each drawing be of something found outside. Use a graphite pencil and add value to each drawing. Spend at least 15 minutes on each drawing.

Week 11 (10/24)

Add five finished (as opposed to quick) drawings to your sketchbook. Draw objects pulled out of a junk drawer. Use a graphite pencil and add value to each drawing. Spend at least 15 minutes on each drawing.

Week 12 (10/31)

No Assignment this week.

Final Evaluation
Value: 4%
Due: 12/12

  • How to draw deep space
  • How to create atmosphere in and around objects
  • How to create compose
  • How to create form using line and shading

Week 13 (11/7)

Add five finished (as opposed to quick) drawings to your sketchbook. Let the theme of each drawing be food. Use a graphite pencil and add value to each drawing. Spend at least 15 minutes on each drawing.

Week 4 (11/14)

Add five finished (as opposed to quick) drawings to your sketchbook. Te drawings can be realted to whatever you choose. Use a graphite pencil and add value to each drawing. Spend at least 15 minutes on each drawing.

Week 16 (11/28)

Add five finished (as opposed to quick) drawings to your sketchbook. Let the theme of each drawing be related to buildings. Use a graphite pencil and add value to each drawing. Spend at least 15 minutes on each drawing.

Week 17 (12/5)

Add five finished (as opposed to quick) drawings to your sketchbook. Let the theme of each drawing be related to popular culture. Use a graphite pencil and add value to each drawing. Spend at least 15 minutes on each drawing.
