 Legs and Feet

Leonardo's sketchbook drawing comparing the leg of a human to that of a horse.

The front view the bones of the leg are most visible along the crest of the tibia also known as the shin. The patella, or knee cap, protrudes at the knee joint. The great trochanter of the femur is also visible at the hip.

In the rear view, the bones of the leg are most visible at the iliac crest, the back of the knee (condyle and epicondyles), at the ankle(malleolus) and the heel (calcaneus).

This drawing of the hands and feet is a kind of portraiture. The artist has managed to convey a sense of the figure's greater posture while only revealing details.

The bones of the foot are structured similarly to those of the hand, except they are elongated and are given additional support by the heel bone or calcaneus.

This view reveals the relationship between the metatarsals. Notice the change in angle from the metatarsals to the phalanges.
