Textures can be categorized as tactile and visual.
- Tactile
textures
are real and can be registered by your sense of touch
- Visual
textures are illusionary. They give the impression of
real textures.

Tactile textures can be created by cutting and
pasting materials like lace or sandpaper. You can also create texture
by embossing, a process that requires you to press onto the surface
of the paper.

Visual textures can be created by grouping lines
together.
And by varying line quality of
