The Principles of Design

Balance

Balance is an equal distribution of weight. A balanced design can be described as , unified, whole and harmonious.

Imbalance causes the opposite effect, discomfort, unease a feeling that things aren't right.

Visual Weight is the illusion of creatwing physical weight on the page( a two dimensional surface. Thye contributing factors of visual weight are:

  • size
  • value
  • color
  • shape
  • texture

Where a mark is on the page also determines its visual weight. The center emphasizes the weight.

Placement away from the center modifies that perception. High up on the page implies lightness and to the sides imples marginality and so on.

Symmetry

Symmetry is an arrangement of elements in which visual weight and balance are achiebved through alignment on an imaginary vertical or horizontal axis, like a mirror image.

Asymmetry

Asymmetry is achieved by organizing dissimilar or unequal weight on the page.To achieve this state, size, value, color, shape, texture must all be weighed against each other in a complex balancing act.

The decision to use symmetry or asymmetry in your design should depend on the subject matter, message and the feeling you wish to convey.
