Emphasis: Focal Point and Heirarchy

The Big Question: How do I make it easy for viewers to see my design and get the message?

The Answer: By learning how to add emphasis where it is needed.

Focal point should be tha part of the design that you think is the most important. It receives the most emphasis.

The design usually has a main message to commuinicate and other peripheral messages.

A primary focal point can be supported by lesser focal poiknts also known as accents. Accents are not as strongly emphasized.

Giving emphasis to all elements of the design is the same as giving it to no elements and the result will be visual confusion.

Methods for establishing a focal point:

  • Make it brightest
  • make it a different color
  • Make it a color if everything else is in black and white
  • make it go in a different direction
  • make it a different value
  • position it differently
  • give it a texture or a different texture than other elements
  • isolate it
  • make it clear and the other elements hazy
  • reverse it
  • make it transparent and other colors glossy
