 Exercise 2

The Matrix logo

Description:
To learn advanced Illustrator drawing techniques. To experience Illustrator's pathfinder cutting techniques by recreating the following logo by designer Tim Girvin (also see Illustrator Wow Book page 201):

 

The MAtrix

Procedure:

1. Download above GIF file (right-click on picture)
2. Launch Illustrator; then Choose File >New Document
3. Choose File >Place "matrix.gif" (place as template)
4. Template is available through the palette option menu in the upper righ corner of the Layers palette.
5 . Using the Type tool write: THE MATRIX (Times New Roman). Scale to the approximate size.
6 . Select the type using the Selection tool
7. Choose Type > Create Outlines
8 . Re-size and re-position the letters to match the template
9 . Choose Window >Pathfinder
10. Use the rectangle tool to draw rectangles to cut or divide objects
11. Choose the Selection tool and select both the rectangle and the letter form you want to divide.
12. On the Pathfinder Palette, find the Divide icon and click once.
13. Deselect both objects
14. Choose the Direct Selection tool to select the letter form. The object is properly selected if all the anchor points are filled in (dark). Use the arrow keys or the Direct Select tool to separate the letter form from the leftover parts.
15. Delete the leftover parts. Continue until the exercise is complete

Hint: You made need to duplicate the letter form to create the extra bits and pieces that go into making up the logo!

16. When you are done email me your finished .ai file at plvasque@ucsd.edu
