 Overview

Why study Color?

  • Helps to dispell the mysteries of color use.

  • Realize there is a reason why colors work well together or not.

  • How do you communicate which colors you mean. For instance their are many reds and artists need to distinguish between a cherry red and a brick red.

The Fauves ("Wild Beasts")

  • Influenced by the Post-Impressionists, Van Gogh, Cezanne, Gauguin

  • Theirs were the first paintings in which color ceased being descriptive.

  • Color became the object of the paintings, while composition and line became secondary.

The color in this painting by Vlaminck emphasizes the emotional quality of color over its descriptive quality.
