This is a portrait by the Russian painter Jawlensky called "The Red Blossom." His palette of pure colors was influenced by the Fauves and features their characteristic flatness and purity of colors.

 


The colors in the painting by Van Gogh are softened by the addition of white. The result is a mellow feeling with low contrast dominance.

 


This painting by Van Gogh is divided into two main horizontal bands of color. It gives the painting a strong sense of composition.

 

 

The color blue in the tree trunks seems to change hue and value depending what other colors it is juxtaposed against.

Gauguin has created a red field against which Jacob and the angel are wrestling. The color red is being used symbolically tp portray this mythical story.

 


Paul Seurat used a pointilist technique to create this painting. Instead of mixing a green color on the canvas, he would place a blue stroke and a yellow stroke next to each other and allowed the color green to be assembled in the viewer's eye.
