Lectures/ Designing with Type

The Three C's

Categories of type

Contrasts

 Conflict

You can inadvertently create conflict in your design if you are using two different typefaces that are similar, but not different enough to stand apart from each other. Line weights and borders should also be chosen with an eye to the thickness of the type.

type conflict

The words, "full of sound and fury" are in a different type face. This could easily be seen as an accident from the viewer's point of view.

You can see the small differences in these two type faces by looking closely at the "a," the "t," and the "s." The are similar but not the same. The border weight is too light compared to the type or the lines. Nor are they in great enough contrast.

There are two different types of script fonts on this design. Also check out the different ornaments. The overall effect is junky and random.
