 Oraganizational Schemes

General Idea

What is the principle or underlying structuring scheme of a site? When you answer "What's it structured by?" you are giving the organizational principle or scheme.  It's the way you have chosen to logically structure the content.

Good structuring principles make it easy for people to:

  • guess or predict where they will find things.

  • agree on where new items should go -extendable

  • comprehensive - includes everything required

  • manageable - not too complex

Sometimes the navigational system mirrors this logical order. Sometimes, site designers and architects decide to emphasize certain areas of the site at the cost of showing off everything.

Discussion Questions

  1. How are the products in a supermarket organized?

  2. How are the items in a personal information manager organized?
