Information Architecture: Navigation ; Some Examples

 Key questions for user:

  • What do I do to find what I want?

  • I want to find that page I was at before.

  • Where am I now?

  • Where can I go from here?

  • What is the structure of this information space? What are the principles of organization?  I feel I know my way around.

IA shapes non-aesthetic experience of user.  Architecture is about what goes where. Navigation is about being able to find by traversing links.

Some examples

Edmunds Car
edmunds is famous for used car pricing.  Their homepage here is a hodge podge of informaton they beleive their users will want. Does it work?

Kelly Blue Book
Kelly is another site for pricing new and used cars. Here they have clustered the different categories of information into logical groupings.

Intel
A semi transparent and tolerably effective slide out to provide more powerful access to the site.

MSNBC
Opaque slide outs that go as far as necessary to hit specific news articles. If there is an arrow then another slide out will appear.

Amazon
The superstore got too big for their familiar tab format.  Here they drive users over to their explicit taxonomy, which they call a directory.   The home page does its best to capture you by your recorded interests.

Dell
Dell offers a customer different ways of reviewing and analyzing different systems. Customizing is the most interactive. Recommended takes away the need for due diligence, product tour takes on a on a guided tour of what's available.

ATT
Dhtml slide outs are gone. A pretty conventional three column layout with each column dedictaed to one of their proven markets. Click down a level and the visual noise level goes up considerably.

HP
Here the dhtml textbox is also a thing of the passed. replaced by a modern looking layout and groupings of low key links. Half the amount of branding and visual noise as ATT.
