Riverdeep
Riverdeep is an educational software/web company that provides
visualization and other tools to help teachers create project
based learning for students. Click on Earthpulse
center to see the entrance. It is a lovely use of metaphor,
that works because it doesn't go too deep, and also helps to
situate the activities in social clusters, so that you feel
that you are part of a team working on your portion of the overall
task.
PBS You try it.
Excellent non-metaphorical site. We see here an excellent set
of icons or images chosen to accompany the text. Nice eye candy
that actually complements and hastens our understanding of the
text. But this site is not based on a metaphor. It is easy to
confuse icon rich sites with metaphor driven onee. The key difference
is the unity of the imagery.
Mantua community
Simple architectural entrance used as navigation from home page.
It recurs at the second level and does succeed in giving the
feel of a community.

Microsoft came to their sense over this well done but essentially
ridiculous interface for selecting movie clips etc to view on
their media player.
Disney
Would you expect otherwise? Disney's concept is well reflected
in the various Disneylands around the world. Why not on the
web? It's their brand.
