Lecture/Metaphor

 Core Problem

When you come to a new situation, how do you know what to do?

Imagine yourself in each of these situations and walk through a typical scenario.

  1. Use a new device or tool
    * To calculate interest on a mortgage or car loan you call up a calculator or widget.  You have to know the buttons to press and the meaning of the actions you can perform.

  2. Get where you want to go in a complex topology of pages
*Find all the info on product X in a web site.  Even if you find some of the information how do you know if you have found all of it?

  3. Plan or undertake a sequence of actions to accomplish a goal
*Change the name of a directory.
Determine the size of a hard disk

The core problem is that in novel situations you need hints, advice,  enough constraint or a sufficiently intuitive context of action to make it obvious what to do.
