Warm up
Make five small paintings of an interesting object that will sustain prolonged investigation such as a toy truck. Symmetrical objects like spheres might not work since their appearance doesn't change much from one point of view to the next. De-emphasize the background and focus only on the object.

Light and spatial illusion
In this painting we will explore the illusion of depth. Depth can be created several different ways, with linear perspective, light (atmospheric perspective) or through contrast of scale. For this assignment we will concentrate on atmospheric perspective.

Architecture and spatial illusion
Throughout art history, from Leonardo to Edward Hopper, architecture has provided challenging visual problems for the artist. For this assignment you will work from photographs or sketches of some architectural structure. Past experience with linear perspective is a plus. You will be required to do preliminary sketches which may include color, before moving on to your final painting.

Two images into one
Hybrid images are made from two or more different elements. How those images are combined is a matter of personal expression and artistic style. Make a painting that blends two different images together and then place it in a simple context in which some simple form of spatial illusion is manifested. You will be required to do preliminary sketches which may include color, before moving on to your final painting.

Anatomy, imagination, form and color
In the 15th century, anatomical illustrations were notable for their poetic and dreamlike presentation of the human form in dissection. In the early 20th century, many surrealist artists married the idea of the human form to the machine. For this painting you will develop existing images of anatomical studies into a painting that expresses hybridity in some way. You will be required to do preliminary sketches which may include color, before moving on to your final painting.
