August 2000 - Vernell Jones is a very talented young artist
working in the realm of pop sculpture. His robots are modeled
after the forms taken from anime cartoons. This interview
with Vernell was conducted in August 2000.
Q: How old are you and where do you go to school?
VERNELL: I am 18 years old and I go to Morse High
in San Diego.
Q: Do you have any brothers and sisters?
VERNELL: I have two brothers, I am the youngest.
Q: Who do you get your creativity from?
VERNELL: I really don't know who I get my creativity
from but I've been drawing and making things from day one.
Q: What other kinds of things do you like do?
VERNELL: I love the extreme sport of Bmx freestyle
(bicycle freestyle), I like electronica, rave, rap/hiphop,
rock, techno, trance, drum and bass and reggae.
Q: What is Xeno and where did he come from?
VERNELL: Xeno was an old tagger AKA describing me
in one word; "alien," "different." I like to separate
myself from the crowd. But Xeno was a mech (big robot) I built
out of tag paper.
Q: What is Gundam Wing? How long have you been a fan?
VERNELL: Gundam Wing is a cartoon series about 5 teenage
boys that pilot big robots called gundams. They fight day
to day trying to figure out their destiny and to save the
world.
Q: Who taught you to draw and sculpt robots?
VERNELL: I pretty much taught myself how to draw
and sculpt/assemble robots. It's just something I have been
doing for fun for a long time.
Q: Do you have any favorite artists?
VERNELL: No, not yet.
Q: Do you believe in aliens?
VERNELL: I don't know but the universe is so vast
anything can be out there watching us.
Q: What is your next project?
VERNELL: I'm hoping for a wide scale robot set with
high detail. |
